Philadelphia, PA
On May 27th, Rickmers Linie, an international break-bulk carrier and project cargo specialist, called the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal to off-load a 195 Ton Transformer. John Burleson, General Manager of Greenwhich Terminals LLC, said, "This was just another routine move for our staff and local ILA at the Terminal. We handle numerous out of gauge cargoes like this regularly. We have the experience and knowledge to call ourselves the best in the business."
The Packer Avenue Marine Terminal is equipped with the heaviest lift crane on the East Coast, a 375 ton capacity Kocks Gantry Crane; Rickmers Linie, however, used Vessels Gear because of the unique capacity of their cranes. What made Packer Avenue the location of choice for this move was their infrastructure and their on-dock rail capability. The huge Transformer, destined for Peco Energy's Grays Ferry substation, was discharged directly to a waiting rail car. In addition to the transformer, five flat racks full of associated pieces with the transformer were also discharged to the pier, stripped, and immediately loaded onto the vessel, all within the four hour timetable that Rickmers Linie scheduled for this port of call. Jason Caserta, Director of Stevedoring & Vessel Operations at Greenwhich Terminals LLC, said, "This move was well planned out in advance and orchestrated to perfection so that Rickmers did not incur any extra port costs or detention time. The vessel did not sit idle at the pier for more than four hours."
